We were the project.

Is it a good idea to start a project for the sole purpose of seeing if you can finish it?
If you have the time, then yes. I do think so.
Oh and I'm talking about done done, not just a working prototype.
Hopefully I'm close to being done done with my first game project with a good friend of mine.
We set out with a simple idea that grew way out of control, then we spent a good time learning about all the gotchas of AS3, many that were game programming related. But it was good not having to worry about a game engine for our first project.
There are a lot of decisions that we made on the way that in hindsight were not the best ones, and some of those we took the time to fix but we are closing in on Beta 3 and shortly after that we will be Done done.
Last night we had a bug hunting session, so when we had most of the more annoying bugs out of the way, there was a strange feeling of joy. To be so close finishing a project that you really care about is a great feeling.
The measurement of success of this project is simple. When it's Done done and we can release it. Then it's a success, because the project was more about us than the game. The game was something the project produced. If it will be popular, then that's just gravy.
The next project is starting show it's shape. It will follow the same mantra of "Success being project completion" but with a larger team and a bit more design work to be done.
So, have you created a project for the sole purpose of seeing if you deliver a Done done product?
